Disclaimer

Use of copyright material is allowed for teaching purposes under Irish Copyright Law, but limits apply. These limits are determined by the ICLA Educational Licence agreement and an expectation that all copyright works will be adequately attributed.

What can be copied for class?

Each course of study can copy the following amounts from one work:

  • 1 chapter from a book
  • 1 scene from a play
  • 1 poem or short story less than 10 pages in length
  • 1 article magazine/journal
  • 1 paper from conference proceedings
  • 1 report case from a volume of judicial proceedings

or where greater, 10% of the same publication determined by 10% of the total number of pages.

Also, the number of copies should equal a copy for each class member and relevant teaching staff

  • Only works owned or subscribed to by the University are covered under the Licence
  • Copying the full text of a publication is not permitted, only the given limits are allowed
  • Copying material from the Excluded Works List is also not permitted

The following works are not covered under the ICLA Licence:

  1. Maps and charts – contact the Ordnance Survey Ireland
  2. Workcards and assignment sheets
  3. Printed music 

Other restrictions

  • Courses covered must be created specifically for student cohorts and accessed via username and password, not for all web users.
  • Pay particular attention to MOOCs, if materials are freely accessible on the web permission required for all copyright material used – ICLA HE licence does not cover use of copyright material on the web unless they are covered by Creative Commons Licence
  • Single use under Fair Dealing, multiple copies under ICLA licence
  • YouTube videos  – check creator/organisation
  • Audio visual use – short clips allowed but link required for longer viewing or films – all must be based on educational purposes – use VLE (Moodle) for restricted access to course users only and warn for educational use only and not for reuse.
  • Link to articles, eBooks, websites digital items to avoid copying
  • Link to other courses via VLE not reusing course content but directing students to it

Open Educational Resources

Open Educational Resources OERs are available under Creative Commons Licenses for educational purposes where the authors have allowed for their work to be shared and used by others.
