Endnote Online Import/Export Quick Start Guide: Welcome

Introduction

Endnote Online is a tool which allows you to collect, organise and format your references. This guide shows you how to export references from journal databases into Endnote Online. This guide assumes you have registered with Endnote Online, that you are logged into Endnote through Web of Science and that you have the Endnote plugin for Word installed. EOLAS

  • Search for articles or books in the main EOLAS search on the library website.  Click on a title.
  • Click the export symbol to the right of the screen .   
  • Choose Direct Export in RIS format   
  • An .ris file will download
  • In Endnote, go to Collect - Import References.  
  • Choose File:  A file called [name].ris should be visible in the Downloads folder on your PC. (In Downloads, Right Click and Sort by Date Modified to bring the latest files towards the top of the list)
  • Import Option:  Choose Refman RIS
  • To:  Choose a group or select [Unfiled]
  • Click Import
    • Note:  If you have a lot of references, choose Added to Library - Newest to Oldest in the drop down menu beside Sort By to see the most recent items added. You can move it to an appropriate group within Endnote.

Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete and EBSCO Ebook Academic Collection

  • Search the database and open an article or book record.
  • Click the export button to the right of the article details  
  • Choose Direct Export in RIS format   
  • An .ris file will download.
  • Follow the same steps as in Eolas above

Ebook Central

  • Browse the list and open a book record
  • Click Cite Book towards the left of the screen
  • Under Export Citation Click Endnote/Citavi
  • An .ris file will download.
  • Follow the same steps as in Eolas above

Google Scholar

  • Search Google Scholar.  From the list of results Click on the   link at the bottom of a record
  • Click the Refman link at the bottom of the popup that appears.  (Don’t choose Endnote as the format unless you have Endnote Desktop Version on your PC.  The Library subscription is to Endnote Online)
  • An .ris file will download.  
  • Follow the same steps as in Emerald below (on the back of this page).

Emerald Insight

  • Search Emerald Insight and Click on the title of an article to open a record. Scroll past the abstract and keywords to Citation. Here you will find a link Download as .RIS
  • Click Download as .RIS
  • An .ris file will download
  • Follow the same steps as in EOLAS overleaf

IEEE

  • Search and open a record in IEEE
  • Click Cite This towards the top of the record
  • Select the RIS tab
  • Click  
  • An .Ris file will download.  
  • Follow the same steps as in Eolas overleaf.

JSTOR

  • Search for articles in Jstor
  • Open the article and Click the Cite This Item button to the left of the record
  • Click the Export a  RIS file link
  • An .ris file will download.  
  • Follow the same steps as in Eolas overleaf.

Science Direct

  • Search for an article in Science Direct
  • For each record in the results list there is an Export dropdown menu.  Choose Export Citation to .Ris
  • A file called science….ris will download.  
  • Follow the same steps as in Eolas overleaf.

Web of Science

  • Search for a citation on Web of Science
  • Tick the citation(s) you want to export from the list of results
  • Click the dropdown Export at the top of the list to and select Endnote Online at the top of the list.
  • Click Export.  The reference will export directly into Endnote.  If you are requested, you may need to login to Endnote. 
  • The reference will appear in the Unfiled folder under My References in Endnote
