Academic Writing

Academic writing may be a little different from the essays and projects which you did in school.

For a start, they're usually longer and require more than just direct quotes as in in your English essays.

In college, when you refer to something in one of your essays it needs to be referenced.

Referencing is the analogue equivalent of hyperlinks: you show your reader where precisely you obtained the information you are using.

If you don't reference your source of information, or don't admit the idea belongs to someone else, then you have plagiarised someone else's work. This will have an effect on the marks you recieve for your essay.

Learn to reference with help from the Library.

Preparing for Exams

Studying for exams can be very stressful. Here at the Library we can help you prepare:

Need help finding a book or resource to study?

Call to the Library Desk or use EOLAS to find what you need.

What to practice for your tests?

We have samples of exam papers, from all three schools, over the last five years for you to use.

How to Find Past Exam Papers

The Past Exam Papers are managed by the Exams Office. They've put all the ones they have into a platform called Guru.

To access this through the Yeats Library link:

  1. Go to the Yeats Library homepage
  2. On the top toolbar look for 'Collections'. (This may appear as a hamburger button, a stack of 3 lines, if you're using a smartphone or tablet. Tap it to open.)
  3. When you hover the cursor over 'Collections'  or select it, a drop-down menu should appear. Past Exam Papers is the last item in the list.
  4. Click on 'Past Exam Papers'. This should bring you straight to the Guru platform.

You may be asked to sign into this platform. Just use your usual ATU sign-on to do so. The easiest way to find exam papers on Guru is with the keyword search or to put in the course code.

If you can't find any papers, please contact your lecturer.

Theses and Dissertations

A stack of theses and a scholar's cap.

Past undergraduate dissertations and postgraduate thesis are useful resources when it comes to writing your own dissertation or thesis.

You can read undergraduate dissertations and postgraduate theses in hardcopy in the Library.

We have a new digital platform to host undergraduate dissertations, and will continue to add these as they become available.

There is also a new platform for international undergraduate dissertations available.

Digital copies of postgraduate theses can be found online through Research@Thea, new institutional repository for all the Institutes of Technology in Ireland.
